When you choose an internet provider, you want to pick one that not only delivers in terms of speed, but can deliver that speed even under the pressure of the evening streaming binge stress test.
Telstra is one provider that is on top of things when it comes to making sure their internet service is fast and flawless, no matter what time of day or night you use it.
Telstra Internet Review
Traditionally (and unfairly) regarded by some as expensive, Telstra Internet has been cutting prices drastically in recent times. And their latest range of bundles hit the sweet spot in terms of costs. One of the new bundles has a unique focus, too – Telstra TV. This tiny little black box, exclusive to Telstra, instantly connects you to streaming services, catch-up TV and rental movies as well as receiving live TV as it happens.
But is Telstra internet just gimmicks and gadgets – or do they truly have something to offer? And while they might be the most experienced provider on the Aussie landscape, with all of the competition these days it’s worth asking whether or not they still ‘have it’? As experts in all things telecommunications, CompareTV have been through all the relevant info to break down everything you need to know about Telstra Internet. Read on to see what we’ve found out!

What is Telstra Internet?
Telstra Broadband has launched what they’re calling their Unlimited + Telstra TV bundle, which combines fast unlimited broadband with easy-access streaming TV.
Available on both ADSL and NBN, the Unlimited + Telstra TV bundle comes in at $99 per month. This includes a home phone line with unlimited calls to Australian landlines as well as calls to mobiles – a hugely valuable inclusion that goes beyond what most providers offer. Never having to worry about how much your phone bill might be is a brilliant thing, and of course you can bring your existing home phone number with you. If you need to call internationally, calls to landline and mobile numbers in a huge range of countries are available for an additional charge as well. With so many people using their mobile as their main phone these days, you definitely want to have calls to mobiles included in your home phone plan!
What you get here is unlimited fast data, with a network that works when you need it to. Telstra Broadband was recently rated the top ISP for Netflix streaming, and to get Netflix to you, the third-generation Telstra TV is, of course, included in the bundle. Also included with this bundle is a bunch of other perks, including the brand new Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2.
Alright, let’s get to the nitty gritty – what broadband plans are available and how much do they cost? Telstra offer some of the most comprehensive plans out there on the market, reflecting their status as Australia’s biggest and most experienced provider. Telstra’s plans are available on a month-to-month contract. There’s a $99 connection fee for new customers on the plans, but that’s waived if you order your service online. Both the NBN and ADSL options come with either a 500GB or Unlimited Data plan. The former is configured on the NBN25 speed tier while the latter runs on the faster NBN50. Telstra also has the NBN100 tier available to FTTP, FTTC and HFC customers, with typical evening speeds of up to 88Mbps. All internet plans can be bundled with any entertainment options of your choice. Read our Telstra Broadband review for more information.
Telstra Internet Bundles with Entertainment
Telstra is probably the most switched-on provider when it comes to bundling together your internet with entertainment, and the current range of entertainment-focused bundles have something for almost everyone, whether you’re a streamer, a gamer, or just love the best of premium TV. The bundles are available in two flavours – with unlimited data at NBN50 speed, or with 500GB data at NBN25 speed.
Get Telstra Internet with a Telstra TV
The Telstra TV bundle gives you exactly what it says, with the acclaimed Telstra TV 3 streaming box supplied ready to use with your fast new Telstra internet service. And to get you up and running, three months of new streaming service BINGE is included (plus even more free months if you join Telstra Plus!)
A Telstra-customised version of a device from renowned US brand Roku, the third-generation Telstra TV is a winner right out of the gate. It includes apps for Netflix, Stan, Telstra TV Box Office, BINGE, Kayo Sports and the excellent documentary streaming service DocPlay, but it’s about more than just on-demand streaming. There are also catch-up apps for all five Australian free-to-air networks – iView, Tenplay, and more – apps for sport fans (AFL, NRL, Netball, UFC, NBA and more), and internet staples like YouTube, TED, Vimeo and TuneIn Radio.
And best of all, there’s the Foxtel Now app, which was the first fully high-definition app for Foxtel Now streaming. It allows you to subscribe to channel packs from $25 per month (Essentials pack) and stream live Foxtel channels in HD direct to your screen. There’s no need for a contract or installation. If you’re a fan of all things entertainment, Telstra TV is the best way to watch it!
Get Telstra Internet with an Xbox One and Game Pass Ultimate
If your idea of fun is more about video games than binge-watching TV, then Telstra’s new game-focused Xbox All Access internet bundle is definitely the one for you. It gives you an Xbox One S game console that’s also great to use for all your favourite streaming services – it’s the best of both worlds, with full 4K streaming.
But to get your game on, you’ll need games – and this bundle includes a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, letting you download and play over 100 games of all types, from Minecraft to Forza Horizon and everything in between. You get to play the full games, too – not demo versions. And because this is Game Pass Ultimate, you can play a huge range of games on your Windows 10 PC as well!
Get Telstra Internet with Foxtel
Whether it’s premium sports or 11 channels of movies that sounds to you like a great evening in, Telstra’s Foxtel bundles are a brilliant choice that both save you money and keep everything simple and easy. You’ve got the choice between Foxtel Sports HD or Foxtel Movies HD with your Telstra internet – and this is the full-quality satellite Foxtel that comes with the iQ4, the most advanced set top box on the market. It can record hundreds of hours of shows, stream thousands of hours of on-demand content included with your Foxtel service, and gives you access to Australia’s only 4K broadcast channels – Fox Sports Ultra HD and Movies Ultra HD.
Added Value with Broadband Plans
As current Telstra customers already know, this is a company that’s quite fond of perks, and broadband bundles are no exception. Included with your bundle is free access to Telstra Air worldwide (including Fon hotspots overseas). That’s over a million Wi-Fi hotspots that you have free access to no matter where you happen to be. For a limited time, any of Telstra’s internet plans also score you free entertainment – three months of BINGE.
You also get the new Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 to connect your service, which now includes 4G backup in case of temporary broadband outage – and best of all, it’ll make use of Telstra’s mobile network while you’re waiting for your NBN or ADSL service to get connected. As soon as you get your modem, you’re able to get connected instantly at no extra cost. The Smart Modem is included in your monthly plan fee if you stay connected for 24 months. Since Telstra’s internet plans are now month-to-month, you can also choose to leave anytime. Simply pay out your modem and you’re done.
Moreover, you get access to Telstra Broadband Protect, which helps keep your family safe from nasties on all devices connected to your network.
