Daily Free to Air Share

Many people think of the ratings as a kind of “battle royale” between the three commercial networks, the ABC and SBS. For years, the commercial networks in particular have gone to great lengths to not just “win” timeslots, but to come out at the top overall – with the biggest overall share of the viewing audience.

This used to be a very simple thing when there were only five channels, but these days, digital multichannels have taken off to the point that there’s a large audience being shared across 20 channels.

Daily Free to Air Share

That’s why the OzTAM ratings report for Daily Free-to-Air Share gives you the information two ways in the one table. As you’ll see below, the five networks are all listed in bold – with the percentage of the audience being the sum of the audience percentages from all their channels added together.

Obviously, this will generally show that the main channel of each Free to Air broadcaster had the lion’s share of viewers, but the Daily Share list also paints an interesting picture of just how popular those multichannels are.

Like some of the other lists, the Daily Share gives you three numbers – the overnight percentage, the 7-day consolidated share and the 28-day share. That lets you see not only which network and channel dominated yesterday, but also how their viewer share is travelling over the course of the previous month.

Important to note for this list is that while it includes all people in the ratings survey as a whole, it only takes into account viewing between 6pm and midnight on a given day – the times when the vast majority of people are watching TV.
