Netflix Dolby Atmos Surround Sound Integration

Updated 13th August 2019

Sound is a critical tool to extend the storytelling beyond the screen and draw audiences into the narrative. Netflix is perfectly aware of that, so the addition of Dolby Atmos support on the streaming service beginning with the acclaimed film Okja was a long time coming

Much like how 4K and HDR bring more stunning and realistic visuals to the screen, Dolby Atmos delivers captivating sound that places and moves audio anywhere in the room. According to Netflix, having the extra dimension of immersive audio is a game-changer for experiencing the realism of a story and feeling like you’re a part of it.

Currently, Dolby Atmos streaming is supported on Microsoft’s Xbox One, One S, One X, Apple TV 4K, Windows 10 computers and tablets, as well as 2017 LG OLED TVs, 2019 Panasonic TV’s and any Sony BRAVIA Android TV after 2018.

On the Xbox, you can get this experience when your console is connected to a Dolby Atmos-enabled home theatre system, TV or soundbar, or via headphones using the new Dolby Atmos for headphones feature available for purchase through the Dolby Access app in the Xbox Store.

Same goes for the Apple TV – to play movies and TV shows in Dolby Atmos from your Apple TV 4K, ensure it is connected to a Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar or AV Receiver.

The LG OLED TVs have built-in Dolby Atmos capabilities that create a 360° sound field around you without the need to connect an external sound system. Netflix plans to add support for even more devices in the near future.

Dolby Atmos support is available for a select number of Netflix original movies that have been recently added. The list includes Triple Frontier, Bird Box, Roma, and Polar. Many of these latest titles are also be available in 4K and HDR.
