About Three Chords and the Truth

Angie (Marshall) could have been one of Australia’s leading musicians, but she sabotaged her own career. Now in her forties, she’s dying and alone - but determined to record one last album. Money is tight and the odd gig at the local pub doesn’t exactly fill the coffers. When she meets teenage runaway Ruby (Maisie Owens), the pair form an unlikely bond. Angie teaches her to play the guitar and write songs, but despite their closeness Angie just can’t bring herself to tell Ruby the truth about her illness. Marshall’s own songs, and resonant voice, alongside the Newcastle setting, bring a tender authenticity to this rebellious music-driven drama.

★★★★★4/5

Three Chords and the Truth is a poignant exploration of life, loss, and the redemptive power of music. Directed by Claire Pasvolsky, the film follows Angie, played with depth by the talented Marshall, as she grapples with her past and seeks to leave a lasting legacy through her final album. The narrative is anchored by the unexpected friendship between Angie and Ruby, a runaway who represents hope and new beginnings. The Newcastle setting provides an authentic backdrop, enhancing the film's emotional resonance. The performances are heartfelt, particularly Marshall's, whose own songs add a layer of authenticity. While the film does tread familiar ground in its themes, it manages to offer a fresh perspective, making it a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate character-driven stories.

★★★★★3.5/5

Three Chords and the Truth is a heartfelt drama that tugs at the heartstrings, but it may not resonate with everyone. Angie, portrayed by Marshall, is a complex character whose journey of self-discovery and healing is both relatable and tragic. The bond she forms with Ruby feels genuine and adds a layer of warmth to the narrative. However, some may find the pacing a bit slow, and the emotional beats predictable. Still, the film shines in its musical moments, with Marshall's songs adding depth to the storytelling. If you’re in the mood for an emotional ride that celebrates music and connection, give it a watch. Just be prepared for a few tears along the way.
