★★★★★4/5
Silver Skates, directed by Mikhail Lokshin, is a visually captivating film that transports audiences to the enchanting world of 1899 St. Petersburg. The story revolves around Matvey, a humble lamplighter's son, and Alice, the daughter of a privileged official. Their worlds collide in a heartwarming narrative that explores their dreams and the societal barriers they face. The cinematography is stunning, capturing the beauty of the ice-covered rivers and festive atmosphere, while the performances are heartfelt, particularly by the lead actors, who bring depth to their characters. The film’s pacing is deliberate, allowing for moments of reflection on the characters' struggles. While it may not break new ground in storytelling, its charm lies in its ability to evoke nostalgia and warmth. Silver Skates is a delightful film that will resonate with those who appreciate romantic tales set in rich historical contexts.

★★★★★3/5
Silver Skates offers a sweet, if somewhat predictable, love story that unfolds amidst the picturesque backdrop of St. Petersburg during the festive season. Matvey and Alice, despite their vastly different social standings, find a spark that drives the narrative forward. While the film is visually appealing, with its beautiful ice-skating scenes and the vibrant atmosphere of Christmas, it sometimes falls into the trap of cliché. The character development feels a bit superficial, and the plot lacks the complexity that could elevate it. However, the chemistry between the leads is palpable, making their journey enjoyable to watch. It’s a film that appeals to those looking for light-hearted romance rather than a gripping drama. Overall, Silver Skates is a charming piece that, while not groundbreaking, delivers a warm escape into a romantic winter wonderland.
