Pie in the Sky (2023)

Pie in the Sky is a delightful exploration of ambition intertwined with the warmth of community spirit. The narrative centres around a young baker, played with charm and depth, who faces the imminent closure of her family bakery. The film excels in its character development, allowing viewers to connect with the protagonist's struggles and triumphs. Director Jane Doe crafts a visually appealing film, with each scene beautifully shot, highlighting the artistry of baking. The performances are commendable, particularly the lead, whose emotional range brings authenticity to the role. While some plot points may feel predictable, the film's heartwarming message about resilience and support from loved ones makes it an uplifting watch. Overall, Pie in the Sky is a satisfying addition to the feel-good genre, earning a solid four stars for its engaging storytelling and relatable themes.

Pie in the Sky is a mixed bag, offering a sweet treat for fans of light-hearted dramas but falling short in some areas. The premise of a struggling bakery owner is promising, and there are moments that genuinely tug at the heartstrings. However, the pacing can be uneven, leading to a few scenes that drag on unnecessarily. The performances are decent, with the lead delivering a relatable portrayal of her character's challenges. Yet, I found some secondary characters underdeveloped, which detracted from the overall impact. The film shines in its visuals, showcasing mouth-watering baked goods that will leave you craving sweets. While it has its charm and a few memorable moments, Pie in the Sky ultimately feels like it's playing it safe, resulting in an average experience. Three stars for its heart but not quite enough substance to elevate it.
