The film's narrative revolves around Isabel Alfaro, a rookie CIA operative, who finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and danger while attempting to bring down the notorious drug lord Rafael Bautista. The performances are commendable, particularly from the leads, who bring depth and nuance to their roles. Isabel's internal struggle between duty and her past relationship with Mayor Eduardo Yzaguirre adds emotional weight to the film. The pacing is brisk, maintaining tension throughout, and the cinematography captures the gritty atmosphere of Mexico City effectively. El Candidato is a noteworthy entry in the crime thriller genre, offering both thrills and thought-provoking commentary.

El Candidato is an ambitious take on the classic CIA thriller, but does it hit the mark? The film introduces Isabel Alfaro, played with intensity by a rising star, who is pitted against the cunning Rafael Bautista. The chemistry between Isabel and her ex, Mayor Yzaguirre, adds an interesting layer to the plot, making the stakes feel personal. However, while the film is well-acted and the action sequences are thrilling, it sometimes feels like it bites off more than it can chew. The pacing can drag in parts, and some plot twists may feel predictable to seasoned viewers of the genre. Still, the film's exploration of morality in a corrupt world is commendable, and it’s certainly worth a watch for fans of political dramas. El Candidato may not revolutionise the genre, but it keeps you engaged and questioning until the credits roll.
