About David Howard Thornton
David Howard Thornton is an American actor, aged 46, from Huntsville, Alabama. He is best known as the silent killer Art the Clown in Damien Leone's Terrifier horror films, and as the monstrous leads of The Mean One and Screamboat. He grew up in Huntsville, the son of a NASA engineer and a special education teacher, started on stage in children's theatre and trained as an elementary school teacher at the University of Montevallo before committing to acting. His early career was stage and voice work: he understudied Stefan Karl Stefansson as the Grinch on the national tour of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, voiced characters in video games such as Two Worlds II and Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom, played the Joker in the fan series Nightwing: Escalation and had a small part in Gotham. He took over Art the Clown from Mike Giannelli for the feature Terrifier, which premiered at the Telluride Horror Show in October 2016, and the part made him a horror icon. Terrifier 2 (2022) took about $15.8 million on a $250,000 budget, and Terrifier 3 (2024) took roughly $98 million on about $2 million and became the highest-grossing unrated film of all time. Art, who never speaks, is played entirely through mime and physical comedy, drawing on silent-film comedians. Away from Art, he led the unauthorised Grinch parody The Mean One (2022), played a murderous Steamboat Willie in Screamboat (2025) and appeared as Art in Pete Davidson's series Bupkis. Terrifier 4 is in development, and in April 2026 he became engaged to Jada Christine after proposing at the Huntsville Comic and Pop Culture Expo in full Art the Clown makeup.

Fun facts about David Howard Thornton
- He understudied Stefan Karl Stefansson, the touring Grinch, for five years on the national tour of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, and calls him his mentor, "my Yoda".
- Art the Clown never speaks, so he auditioned by improvising a silent scene on camera, and he watched Mike Giannelli's earlier performance in All Hallows' Eve several times to learn the character's mannerisms before making Art his own.
- He took over Art from Mike Giannelli, who had played the clown in Damien Leone's earlier shorts and in All Hallows' Eve but retired from acting before Terrifier was made.
- Two of his lead roles are horror parodies of children's icons: the Grinch in The Mean One, and Steamboat Willie in Screamboat, which could be made because that version of the 1928 cartoon mouse entered the US public domain on 1 January 2024.
- Terrifier 3 opened at number one at the US box office in October 2024, ahead of Joker: Folie a Deux, and he said he was stunned by the result.
- France barred viewers under 18 from Terrifier 3, the first such ban on a horror film there since Saw III in 2006.
- He played the Joker in the fan-made web series Nightwing: Escalation (2016 to 2017) and again in the 2025 fan short Jokers Wild.
- He proposed to his girlfriend in April 2026 at the Huntsville Comic and Pop Culture Expo while dressed as Art the Clown.

Frequent collaborators
Damien Leone
Writer and director of the Terrifier films and the creator of Art the Clown; the two trade ideas for kills by phone between films, though Thornton says most of them are Leone's.[3][9][12]
Lauren LaVera
Plays the heroine Sienna Shaw opposite him in Terrifier 2 (2022) and Terrifier 3 (2024).[3][13][14]

Jenna Kanell
Mike Giannelli
Played Art the Clown in The 9th Circle, the short Terrifier and All Hallows' Eve before Thornton took over; Thornton studied his performance before making the part his own.[3][4][12]
Steven LaMorte
Directed him as the lead of The Mean One (2022) and Screamboat (2025).[3][15][16]
Stefan Karl Stefansson
The touring Grinch whom Thornton understudied for five years; Thornton credits him as a big influence on his physical comedy.[1][4]
Pete Davidson
Star and co-creator of Bupkis, in which Thornton guest-starred as Art the Clown.[1][3]
Style, technique and reception
Art the Clown does not speak, so everything is done with the body and face. Thornton cites the silent-era comedians Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers, modern physical performers such as Jim Carrey, Robin Williams and Rowan Atkinson, and the creature performers Doug Jones and Andy Serkis as influences, and credits his years as Stefan Karl's Grinch understudy for refining his physical comedy. The prosthetic teeth and contact lenses made speaking and eating awkward, and Leone reportedly made the teeth hard to talk in so that he would stay quiet between takes.[1][4]
He says he treats Art as a performance rather than something that weighs on him, and that playing the character has made him inventive: he and Leone swap ideas for kills, although he credits most of them to the director. On set he is open about the debt to Mike Giannelli, who played Art before him, and says he had big clown shoes to fill.[4][9]
Critics have been warm to his Art even when they were not warm to the films: reviewers of Terrifier praised the effects and the performances of Thornton, Jenna Kanell and Samantha Scaffidi while criticising the writing, and Terrifier 2 was praised for the performances of Lauren LaVera and Thornton (87% positive on Rotten Tomatoes from 83 reviews; Metacritic 59). Terrifier 3 scored 78% from 127 reviews and a Metacritic 62. The films are extremely graphic: there were reports of viewers feeling ill at Terrifier 2 screenings, and France barred under-18s from Terrifier 3. Screamboat received mixed reviews.[12][13][14][16]
Off screen he is an approachable convention guest: he talked to fans at Nightmare Weekend Richmond in October 2024 days after Terrifier 3 opened, thanked fans for the box office result, and said he never expected the growth of Art as a pop-culture figure, which by 2024 included life-size animatronics and dozens of merchandise items.[8]

Questions about David Howard Thornton
How tall is David Howard Thornton?
There is no reliable published height for David Howard Thornton. Wikipedia and Wikidata give none, and the heights on celebrity-height websites are unsourced and disagree with each other, so CompareTV does not print one. The same goes for his weight. What can be said is that Art the Clown is played largely through mime and physical comedy, which Thornton built from silent-film comedians.
Who plays Art the Clown in Terrifier?
David Howard Thornton plays Art the Clown in Terrifier (2016), Terrifier 2 (2022) and Terrifier 3 (2024), and is attached to Terrifier 4. The clown was played by Mike Giannelli in the earlier shorts and in All Hallows' Eve before Thornton took over for the first feature.
What are David Howard Thornton's movies and TV shows?
His best-known films are Terrifier (2016), Terrifier 2 (2022) and Terrifier 3 (2024), plus The Mean One (2022), Stream (2024), Screamboat (2025), Namaka (2025), Rough Cut (2026) and The Dead Place (2026). On television he appeared in Bupkis (2023) as Art the Clown, Gotham (2017) as an orderly and The Bravest Knight (2019) and Alma's Way (2021) as a voice actor. Films and TV shows with David Howard Thornton are listed above, newest first.
What is David Howard Thornton's net worth?
There is no reliable published figure for David Howard Thornton's net worth, and Wikidata has none, so CompareTV does not give an amount. What is documented is the box office of the films he leads: Terrifier 2 took about $15.8 million on a $250,000 budget, and Terrifier 3 took about $98 million on roughly $2 million, the highest gross ever for an unrated film. Those are film takings, not his pay. He has also led The Mean One (about $1 million at the box office) and Screamboat, and he is a regular guest at horror conventions.
How old is David Howard Thornton?
David Howard Thornton is 46 years old. He was born on 30 November 1979 in Huntsville, Alabama, according to Wikipedia, Wikidata and TMDB.
Who is David Howard Thornton's wife or partner?
He is engaged rather than married, as far as published reports go. In April 2026 he became engaged to his partner Jada Christine (spelled Christie in some reports), proposing at the Huntsville Comic and Pop Culture Expo while dressed as Art the Clown. NBC reported that they had been dating since July 2025. He has not made any children public.
What is David Howard Thornton's nationality and where is he from?
He is American. He was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, attended Grissom High School and took a degree in elementary education at the University of Montevallo before becoming an actor. His parents were a NASA engineer and a special education teacher.
Is there a Terrifier 4, and is David Howard Thornton in it?
Terrifier 4 is in development with Damien Leone writing and directing and Thornton listed as returning to play Art the Clown. In October 2025 Thornton said Leone was keeping the script close and had promised a big origin story and finale, and in May 2026 Leone said the film is set around New Year's Eve. There is no release date yet.
What was David Howard Thornton's first movie or role?
Before Terrifier his work was mostly stage and voice acting: he toured with the Grinch musical, voiced characters in the video games Two Worlds II (2011) and Invizimals (2013) and did additional voices in the anime Miss Hokusai (2015). His first feature as Art the Clown was Terrifier, which premiered in October 2016. The Mean One is a 2022 film, not an earlier one.
Has David Howard Thornton won any awards?
No major award wins are on record. He was nominated for best supporting actor at the 2019 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards for Terrifier, and his films have been selected for the Telluride Horror Show, FrightFest and Fantastic Fest.
Is David Howard Thornton related to Billy Bob Thornton?
No published biography links David Howard Thornton to Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton's own accounts describe his parents as a NASA engineer and a special education teacher in Huntsville, Alabama. He is also sometimes searched as David Thornton or, by misspelling, David Howard Thorton.
Did David Howard Thornton play the Grinch?
Yes, in two ways. He understudied Stefan Karl Stefansson as the Grinch for five years on the national tour of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, and in 2022 he starred as the title monster in the unlicensed horror parody The Mean One, directed by Steven LaMorte.
