Mobile Plans in Australia – Your Ultimate Guide

With the explosive growth of mobile technology, Australians now have more choice than ever when it comes to choosing a mobile provider. You can text and call almost anywhere with a strong enough signal. However, it still pays to know that you are getting the best connection available for the best price. But it’s not just calls and SMS. Smartphones, tablets, and even laptops can all connect to mobile towers across the country. Not to mention wireless broadband dongles that connect all your devices to the mobile network. With 4G connections available in every major city, there has never been a better time to take your internet with you.

However, such a range of choice brings with it a level of complexity. The vast range of options can make it hard to find the mobile plans that suit your needs. Do you want to make voice calls? Send text messages via SMS? How many minutes and messages? Do you want the freedom that comes with having an unlimited plan, letting you make calls and send messages at will? OR would you prefer to cap these amounts in order to save money? Then there’s the matter of mobile data. Are you content with receiving a small amount each month to check emails and do a bit of light browsing? Or would you prefer to upgrade your plan to receive more mobile data? There are even mobile plans that now offer unlimited data – a first in Australia. But is this worth the cost?

Taking all of these factors into account can be tough. While you may know your own mobile habits, finding a plan that fits them well can still be a struggle. Researching each provider for their best deals can take time. On the other hand, your habits may change as new options and plans become available. With this in mind, it’s easy to see how it can be hard to know that you are getting the best deal on your mobile plans – no matter how you’re using them. The question is, how did we arrive at the point where mobile phone plans became so complicated? How did we go from a time where each household had one phone number that you could look up in a directory, to the country having more mobile phone accounts that there are people? And what can we do to help streamline our choices when it comes to picking a mobile plan that suits our needs?

How Phones Have Changed in Australia

When first public telephone exchange was built in Sydney in 1882, public phones were more popular than landlines, as having a phone in your house was quite an investment, as each phone required a dedicated line to the exchange, and each call required a continual connection from the caller to the recipient. At this time, people would queue up to use the publicly available telephones whenever they needed to make a call. As demand grew, more and more local telephone exchanges were built and by 1900, Australia was home to around 30,000 exchanges – most run by human operators who would listen to your request and literally plug your line in to connect a caller to their recipient.

By 1987 the entire country had access to basic telephone services. Over time, automation removed the need for human-run switchboards, with pulse dialling directing a mechanical rotor arm to make the connection. Today, landlines use circuit switching to achieve the same results. When you dial a number, your phone sends tones down your phone line to your telephone carrier’s exchange. There, your call is routed through a switch to the number you’re calling. The continual connection still exists, but much of the technology has been made more efficient. Your voice gets digitised by your telephone carrier for much of the call and may be sent through fibre-optic cables. These cables are faster than copper, lag free and cost-effective.

The domestic satellite system AUSSAT was launched in 1981, delivering of international telecommunication services nation-wide. The same year, Telecom launches MTS, our first public mobile phone system. Unlike our the system our smartphones run on, this service was not cellular, but is fully automatic and relies on the towers to ping the mobiles for location. The mobile telephone service used 120 radio channels in the 500 MHz band and could support 4,000 customers.

Jump forward to 2001 and things have changed drastically. MTS is gone, replaced by the digital GSM network. There were more mobiles than landlines, with over 12 million mobile services connected. In a few short years, 3G mobile networks arrive, giving Australia access to live mobile broadband. Suddenly, over 96 percent of the population can experience streaming mobileTV, full-length audio and video music tracks, multiplayer games, face to face video calls and more. Then 4G arrives, providing faster connections and better transitions when connecting between towers. And now we have 5G. Promising even faster speeds, and even efficiency gains like lower battery usage, 5G mobile technology could be a real game-changer for every mobile phone user. However, one challenge that still faces Australian mobile users is coverage. Australian is a large country with over seven and a half million square kilometers of land. But our population is just 24 million. So most mobile providers focus on delivering and enhancing the services they provide in large population centers like major cities and large townships.

Finding a Mobile Plan – Your Options

Your ideal mobile plan will depend on several factors. First is your mobile usage habits – how often you expect to make calls or send SMS. Second is your budget – with enough money it is possible to get a 4G plan with unlimited calls, text, and data, but it doesn’t come cheap. The third is potential – you may not need mobile video chat right now, but it’s nice to know you have the capacity for it should the need arise. And fourth is the technology you have available. If you’re using an old-school “dumb” phone – one that just deals with calls and texts – then getting data is not really a good investment. Conversely, if you have a wireless dongle, then calls and texts are not a required part of that service. But perhaps the most important factor is availability – does your preferred mobile provider have network coverage in the areas you’re likely to need them?

With this in mind, the first step in choosing between mobile providers in Australia is uncovering what each one offers, the prices and benefits involved, as well as factors like contract times and bundling opportunities. This may sound like there is a fair bit of work involved, but luckily Compare TV has done the hard yards for you!

Calls and Texts

For those of us with mobile phones, this is a stock-standard option your probably familiar with. These plans and packages do what they say on the tin – they let you make and receive calls and SMS from your mobile phone using the mobile towers in your area. Here, issues like 3G and 4G do play a part – 4G capable towers are able to handle more connections than 3G at any given point in time. Plans that include calls and text come in two main types, capped and unlimited. Capped means that the number of minutes you have available to make calls has an upwards limit. Same with text – you can only send a certain amount of text messages consisting of 120 characters in a given period of time. Some of these plans allow you to roll over unused minutes and messages, but that depends on the provider and the plan.

Mobile Data

For many mobile phone owners, this is a must-have. With the advent of the smartphone in the early 2000s, being able to access the internet wherever you are has become less of a wow-factor and more of an expectation. Apps, maps, games, video calls – what you choose to do with the data is up to you. And the device you use is too! Smartphones may have been the first to bring mobile internet to the masses, but now you can find tablets and even desktop-replacing laptops that have these features. Not to mention the wireless dongle- a device that has saved many a freelancer or holidaymaker from the trials of finding a cafe with free WiFI. However you get online, chances are that once you have the chance to use these devices, it’s hard to imagine how you got on before mobile internet. Of course, this depends on how strong your connection is – the difference between a 3G connection and a 4G connection is huge once you get to try both. And also on how much data you have available.

Unlimited plans

While unlimited plans are a recent addition to the Australian mobile marketplace, it’s safe to say that these mobile plans will soon set the gold standard. First, they offer unlimited calls and texts, which is a great feature for any mobile user. Gone are the days when you used to have to calculate how much credit you had before you hit send or stop a call mid-way through to top up your call minutes. With an unlimited plan, you canal ways get in touch with family and friends – as long as you have reception. The same goes for mobile data. As connection qualities improve and the volumes of data we send and receive continue to grow, so too does the need for greater mobile data limits. With an unlimited plan, there’s no need to hold back on streaming TV directly to your smartphone or making a lengthy video call. You can get connected with confidence, knowing that a data cap is not going to interrupt you.

As the way we use our mobile plans continue to evolve, mobile providers are continuing to find new ways to make the services they provide unique. Some providers make certain calls free, others don’t charge fees for SMS sent after certain times, or to other numbers inside their network. Still, others offer unmetered access to streaming content such as TV shows, movies or sport. And then there are bundles, where you can choose to receive a discount on your combined bill if you have a mobile plan, landline and internet connection all with the same provider.

Choosing Your Best Mobile Options

In the process of selecting a mobile plan (or plans) that suit your needs, it pays to keep a few factors in mind. While it may be tempting to go for the cheapest plan to save money or an unlimited plan to get a no-worries mobile experience, the middle ground is where you may find the most value.

As an example, say you have an old-school dumbphone, a tablet that does WiFi, and an older laptop that doesn’t have a slot for a SIM card. If you make a lot of calls, it may be tempting to just go for a plan that offers unlimited calls and text, while foregoing data altogether. However, you could choose to get two plans – one for the phone and one for a wireless dongle that connects your devices to the internet while you’re out and about. Another example might be that you are working full-time, spend a good portion of your day either at work or travelling between home and the office. It may be tempting to just get a mobile plan that offers a reasonable amount of calls and texts, with a few gigabytes of data on top each month. However, if you also have a family at home (or are really close with your housemates) then you might want to explore the value offered in a bundle that gives you a home phone, broadband and mobile on a single plan. This not only gives you access to more modern essentials at home, but it could end up saving you money in the long run. If you’re a Senior looking for a mobile plan on a fixed income, flexibility and cost might be your biggest concern.

No two people are exactly alike, and your mobile needs might not be the same as others. Your circumstances and how you use your mobile phone may call for a quick examination of what’s on offer with each provider.

Are You A Text Addict?

While calls are the mainstay of most mobile plans, the ability to send SMS comes in a close second. In some ways, text messages are superior to making a call. With a call, both you and the recipient need to be in a position to talk without distraction, or without interrupting work or other important activities. You also need to be mindful of the level of background noises. With text, it’s much simpler. You can say what needs saying and it will stay in the recipient’s inbox until they are able to read it. If you rely on text messages a lot, you may want to look into a plan that offers unlimited SMS. However, if you’re more likely to rely on messenger apps than SMS, this is less of an issue.

How Many Call Minutes Do You Need?

It’s no secret that calls make up the backbone of most mobile plans. Unless you’re looking for a data-only SIM card, the amount of calls you receive per month (or per recharge) is going to matter. There is little more frustrating than getting cut off part-way through a call. Conversely, there is no need to spend up big on a plan that offers a large number of call minutes if you are not going to use them. Finding the balance between these two is key.

Mobile Binging

The freedom that mobile data provides cannot be denied. There’s something so freeing about being able to take the internet with you wherever you go. Video calls, mobile games, and even streaming music services all available at the push of a button. And they all use data. If you find that the convenience of being able to check emails on the fly or order a pizza from the couch is the kind of thing you need in your daily life, then you need to make sure you have the data to match your usage.

Costs and Contracts

This is important regardless of what kind of plan or bundle you go for. It doesn’t matter if you go for a budget pre-paid option or an unlimitedSIM plan – your plan or bundle needs to fit inside your budget while still offering you value. There’s also the matter of contracts. Mobile plans are, by their very nature, mobile- you can take them with you wherever you go in the country. However, you may find a better deal after signing on with one contract, only to be bound into paying the set amount for a year or more. Or if you plan on travelling overseas for a time, you might still get stuck paying for a service you are not in a position to use. If you find that either of these factors are important, then a month-to-month plan might offer you more peace of mind.

Availability

This matters for all mobile services. Unlike other countries, Australia has a vast land mass and a comparatively small population. In most cities, you will have decent reception no matter where you are. Once you get out past the suburbs and into more rural areas, it can be tough to get a signal with some providers. In other areas, you may get a strong signal, but it may be on a 3G network, or even 2G (sometimes called “edge’).This can be okay if you’re just after basic calls and SMS, but for everything else, this can result in a slowdown of data. If you live in or visit an area that does not have towers that are compatible with your mobile provider, then you are out of luck. So it pays to check out the coverage maps of each provider before you sign up, and make sure they have services in the areas you frequent.

Bundle your Mobile Plan and Save

If you are looking for a new mobile plan, chances are that there may be a few other telecommunication services you use on a regular basis. Landlines, although not as popular as they used to be, can be a valuable addition to any household. Broadband internet is also considered a must-have by many. And let’s not forget some of the small perks and bonuses that telcos like to throw in to sweeten the deal from time to time. Depending on your needs as a consumer, these perks can make or break a decision to sign up to a particular deal.

So it’s no wonder that bundles that include mobile connections are increasingly popular. As more and more Australians connect multiple devices using mobile connections, competition can get heated. Each telco wants you to sign up with them, so they try to find new and innovative ways to stand out. Some providers like Telstra choose to throw in subscriptions to streaming TV services. Others may offer unmetered access to streaming services like OVO Play. And still others like Southern Phone make it easy to get all your devices connected on one plan. The choice is ultimately yours!

But finding your best mobile on your own can be tricky. There’s so much to consider! That’s why our interactive mobile provider bundle comparison page comes in handy. Instead of trawling through the range of sometimes-confusing terms of service documents made available by telcos, we give you the tools you need to get a clear an overview of plans that match your interests, all on one page.

To get started, just select the kind of bundle you’re looking for – we suggest starting with a budget and working your way from there. Finally, play around with the contracts, data, and calls/text options to see what works for you. Apply these filters and we’ll give you a customised list of providers, bundle plans and details on what’s included, as well as details on the minimum costs – not to mention quick links to the mobile provider websites to get more information straight from the source.

Popular Mobile Plan Options

The best way to judge the value of a mobile plan is via a first-hand experience. As it happens, a lot of plans offer either a 30-day opt-out period or month-to-month contracts that let you shop around. Whether you want plain calls and text and just want to check out the reception in your area, or you want to see how the perks on offer really stack up, you’re sure to find a plan that meets your needs.

With this in mind, here’s a quick selection of the kinds of mobile bundles you can expect to see. All you need to do is pick the plan that’s the right fit for you!

SIM Only Plans

As the name suggests, this kind of plan gives you the minimum – a SIM card. With this, you can get connected using the device of your choice. Just slot in the SIM card and your good to go. This is a popular choice if you already have a handset, tablet, laptop or dongle and just want to get it connected. You can find SIM only deals that offer calls and text, data, or a mix of the two.

SIM and Device Plans

This option is a great choice if you don’t have a mobile phone, or if you are looking to upgrade to a newer model. These plans usually involve a 12- or 24-month contract, with the cost of the handset built into the monthly payments. This is a good choice if you are unable to purchase a handset outright, or if you want to spread the cost out over time.

Month-to-Month Plans

A popular choice for those who want to try out a mobile provider before they commit, month-to-month contracts allow you to enjoy 30-odd days of mobile services, with an automatic direct debit payment setup that makes it a set-and-forget option with one major advantage. If at any time you no longer want to keep that service you can cancel your payments with no lock-in times and no early termination fees.

Prepaid Plans

This is a fantastic option for those of us on a budget, or who keep their mobile usage to a minimum. Unlike most other plans which involve paying a monthly fee for a service, prepaid plans work on a credit basis. You receive a SIM card and purchase credit to activate the features you want. Different plans charge different amounts for different services. If you use up your credit for the month, you can just top it up with more when you need it.

Contract Plans

Mobile contracts form the mainstay of many telcos offerings. They involve signing a contract (hence the name) where you agree to pay a set monthly fee for a limited time (usually 12 to 24 months) during which time you will receive a set amount of services. This is useful if you know that a particular mobile provider offers you more value and you are happy to pay the set rate. All mobile providers have to give you the minimum cost of their plans, so you know up-front how much a plan will cost you in the long run. However, it is also a good idea to pay attention to any early termination fees or excess usage fees that may be included.

Mobile Plans With Perks

Many mobile providers try to differentiate their services with extra features and bonuses that come as part of their contract or plan. Some like OVO offer unlimited data-free live streaming on OVO Play, their premier sports streaming service. Other might offer free or discount movie tickets, special rates on their other services, or free calls and texts between other numbers on the same network. Others like Yomojo give you family discounts, with all mobile connections paid on a single plan that makes managing costs simple. And then you have others that deliver seasonal discounts, like Vodafone who offer special rates for new students at the start of the study season.
