Broadband for Families – How to Get Connected with the Best Deal

It wasn’t all that long ago that people thought of the Internet as a novelty, an optional thing. Sure, it was incredibly useful for a whole bunch of things, but you could do most of them without the Internet too – so on the priority list of family expenses, the broadband connection was probably a fair way down.

To say that times have changed is an understatement. Access to a broadband connection today is just as vital to modern life as the other utilities that connect to your home, like power and water. Any family with kids will already know how much they depend on the Internet – they’ve grown up with it around, after all. But it’s no longer just something your kids use to play games and chat online. No matter what the size of your household, your family broadband connection is vital for a whole range of everyday tasks, from paying the bills and doing the banking, to organising the weekly shopping (and even having it delivered) to accessing services and information for everything from your local community to your kids’ school.

And then there’s that other thing that makes a good broadband connection essential – entertainment. Australians have one of the highest and fastest take-up rates of streaming services on the planet, and millions of households now look to Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime Video for their entertainment, as well as Kayo for their sport streaming, and to YouTube for a vast array of other content. And while streaming tech has come a long way in recent years – you can stream HD and even 4K video at lower data rates than ever before – all that streaming still chews through a lot of data allowance. Multiple family members watching several different streams at the same time also quickly shows up the limitations of a slow connection.

So what sort of broadband should you be looking at for your family? What sort of connection? How much monthly data? And how fast? It might all seem a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry – we’re here to sort through the technical jargon for you, and help you find the perfect broadband plan for your family in the extensive list above.

Types of Broadband

If you’ve spent any length of time looking at the offerings from the many and varied internet providers, you’ll have quickly noticed that the actual type of connection you get has a huge bearing on a few key things – like the download and upload speed you can achieve, the amount of data you can use each month, and the price itself.

The National Broadband Network (NBN) will eventually become the default broadband option for every Australian, but it’s still in the process of being rolled out – so you may find yourself being given other options. Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll be looking at.

NBN

The new national broadband network being built by the federal government, the NBN has seen its fair share of controversy in recent years – and that’s meant that while there’s only one NBN, there’s several different methods of connecting to it. Depending on where you live, you’ll be assigned one of those methods. It could be a fibre optic cable directly into your home, or it could be a fibre cable going to a box in your street that you then connect to using your existing phone line. If you’re in a remote area of Australia, you might even find you can connect to the NBN via satellite.

The method of connection you get will have a big impact on how fast your NBN connection can be – but the good news is that for most people, it’ll be substantially faster than what they’ve used before, and that’s good news for data-hungry families. For a household with multiple internet users, a fast NBN connection will be essential.

ADSL

The main method of connecting broadband for the past couple of decades, ADSL manages to send a fast broadband signal down your regular telephone line thanks to some rather clever digital magic that still lets you use the same line to talk on the phone. For years it was the fastest way for consumers to connect, but even broadband developments like ADSL2+ have been overtaken by the sort of faster tech being used by the NBN. That’s why the ADSL system is slowly being retired as the NBN rolls out – but for now, a large number of people still rely on it, despite its limitations (for example, the further away you live from the local phone exchange, the slower your broadband will be).

Mobile Broadband

Another option used by millions every day on their mobile phones – and by quite a few people at home as well – is mobile broadband. As the name suggests, it uses the mobile phone networks to send and receive data, making it perfect for smartphones and other portable connected devices. But in some cases, mobile broadband can deliver a faster and more reliable connection that the other options available in an area, which is why it’s possible to set up a mobile broadband connection at home. It’s not without its downsides – mostly a limited data allowance – but can be a huge relief for people that don’t yet have the NBN and can’t get an ADSL connection.

There are some really good mobile broadband deals available to suit families, too – we’ve got a guide to finding a family mobile plan you can check out, as well as a separate guide for families with kids.

Cable

In the past, one way to get substantially faster broadband was to sign up to a service that used the Telstra or Optus pay TV cables running down your street (if you were lucky enough to have those cables installed in your area at all). Cable broadband is extensively used in the US, and was a very reliable and fast service here as well – though it was limited to just the two providers that owned the cables. As the NBN rolls out, the Optus cable network is being decommissioned, while the Telstra cables are being taken over by the NBN, where an even faster cable service will be the way many connect to the NBN in the future.

The NBN Speed Tiers

When the NBN was set up, it was decided to divide it into different “tiers” based on the top speed that a connection could achieve, with faster speeds costing more per month. The idea was to provide cheaper options for those who didn’t need a super-fast connection (such as pensioners or seniors whose main use for the NBN would be a home phone line, rather than broadband).

The cheaper prices on the slower speed tiers will tempt some, but for a family, as we mentioned above, multiple users means that speed is more important than it is for a single person getting online. Here’s what the tiers you’ll see advertised actually mean; the numbers for each, by the way, represent the download speed in megabits per second.

NBN 12: The cheapest and slowest tier, this is suitable only for those who occasionally browse the web, do email and banking online, and want to keep their home phone once the NBN arrives without breaking the bank. It’s not fast enough for HD streaming even for a single person, and is definitely not recommended for families.

NBN 25: A more useful speed, with faster uploads as well, this tier is best for a single person, or a small family with modest internet use.

NBN 50: Now we’re onto something that can support a regular-sized family. With fast downloads and substantially faster uploads, this is the sweet spot you should be going for (it’s also the fastest speed supported by many providers).

NBN 100: Not available to everyone – it depends on your connection – and also coming at a price premium, this is a speed tier that’ll handle anything a family can throw at it, including multiple 4K video streams.

The Things That Matter When Choosing a Broadband Plan for Families

It’s tempting to just look for the cheapest option that ticks the basic boxes when you’re getting your family’s broadband connected, but it’s important not to rush the decision. While you’re going to get the same electricity no matter which power company you pick, and the same water no matter who bills you for it, the quality of your broadband internet connection is something that can vary massively, depending on the provider you choose. There’s also the things that come along with some broadband plans that can be very important to families – for example, bundled TV entertainment from streaming services or companies like Fetch and Foxtel.

Outside of the features and added services, though, the quality of the connection itself is hugely important. Not every broadband provider is created equal, and that’s never been more apparent than in the evening when families are home from school and work, heading to Netflix for the night’s entertainment. Less well-run providers can cram too many users onto their service, causing it to slow down for everyone just when decent speed is needed most. The result? The dreaded pausing and “buffering” when trying to stream your favourite new show.

When you’re picking a plan for your family, there are a few thing we recommend you check out before handing over your cash.

Speed

Even in a two-person family, a broadband connection is going to need to cope with a higher demand for data – and if you’ve got kids there as well, that can skyrocket as multiple family members start streaming, downloading, gaming and browsing at once. The key to keeping things smooth for everyone is simple – speed. You want the fastest connection you can afford – don’t be tempted to save money by picking a slow NBN 12 plan (more on NBN speeds in a moment). With sufficient speed, everyone will have a much better time online.

Also, look for the “typical evening speed” number that now has to be quoted on provider’s sites for each and every plan – the higher this number is, the better quality service you can expect to get even at the most demanding hours of the day.

Good Deal

While going for the cheapest plans doesn’t exactly give you your money’s worth when it comes to quality connection, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get a good deal that can provide what your family needs when it comes to having a reliable internet at home.

A broadband connection is now considered as a necessary utility at home — in the same vein as electricity, gas, and others are. Because of this, Australian providers have now created family-friendly plans and bundles that come with a lot of added perks and discounts, making it so much easier for parents to make an informed decision on what ISP to go for.

Quality

This is a harder one to pick, because you can’t truly know what a provider is like until you’ve tried them. But aside from reading the many broadband reviews on this site, you should do a quick search online to see what people are saying about the providers you’re thinking of choosing. Beware of suspiciously cheap deals from lesser-known providers – and if you possibly can, go for an Internet plan without a lock-in contract. The NBN in particular is designed to make switching providers easy for consumers.

Data

Families use a lot of data – indeed, just streaming things like Netflix can quickly clock up the gigabytes, and when you have multiple people streaming, downloading, sharing photos and videos, downloading and playing games, you don’t want to worry about data limits. The easy answer is to go for a plan with unlimited data – and thankfully, these days there are plenty to choose from, with even top-tier providers like Aussie Broadband offering them.

Shop Around!

We’re at a pretty great time for broadband in Australia, where intense competition has grown out of the arrival of the NBN – and that’s meant that providers have had to match or beat their competitors for both price and service. Plans with unlimited data usage were once relatively rare – and some were with providers whose service slowed down from all the data usage! Thankfully those dark days are largely behind us, with providers allocating enough data for everyone and almost all the major players having unlimited-data plans.

If you’ve got a family that’s active online, unlimited is the way to go. Otherwise, you risk running out of allowance mid-way through a month – and that can mean either hefty additional charges, or your connection being slowed down to unusable speeds.

Remember, thanks to the NBN we’re living in an era of unprecedented competition between broadband providers – and you and your family are the winners. Work out what you need, then take advantage of some of the great deals on offer. Remember, the best kind of family broadband is the connection that “just works” – and works nice and fast – for everyone in the household!
