Compare Plans from Australia’s best Broadband and NBN Providers
No matter what your broadband needs are, there’s an NBN plan or bundle that’s right for you – and the great news is you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get first-class broadband, either. For example, there’s NBN bundles that include a 100GB basic NBN connection and a home phone with unlimited calls – it’s great for those who need to keep in touch. Some internet providers also offer affordable unlimited NBN plans including home phone as well. If you don’t care about the home phone, other internet plans come in super cheap from as little as $65/month with no lock-in contract. That makes it a great affordable way to get connected and work from home.
Or if it’s entertainment that you’re connecting for, check out entertainment bundles which include broadband NBN unlimited data, a home phone with unlimited calls anywhere in Australia, a smart modem and even streaming TV services thrown in with the bundle. There’s tons of value to be had – so compare, connect and save!
Choosing an Internet Plan
When you’re shopping around for a plan – regardless of what bundle that broadband plan comes with – there are some things you should be looking for as a priority to make sure you have a great internet experience with as few hassles as possible.
For example, if you’re a single person working full time and spending most of your waking hours away from home, you probably won’t use much monthly data – even with regular Netflix streaming. But if you’re a family with multiple kids (see our top broadband plans for families with kids) who all have their own entertainment needs in addition to yours and your partner’s, you’ll find yourself chewing through a huge amount of data in no time. You probably would be fine with a contract plan, but you’ll want a connection that’s as fast as possible so multiple family members can use it at the same time without slowdown.
Students will spend an enormous amount of time online, both for study and for entertainment (see our top broadband plans for students). If you’re into PC or console games there’s going to be some huge downloads in your future – go for unlimited data as a must-have, just for the peace of mind. But try and avoid that contract – you want the freedom to move around.
And if you’re running your own small business, look for an internet provider that offers business connections (see top broadband plans for businesses) – you get priority support, some special perks useful for businesses like a fixed IP address, and in some cases, a guarantee of service reliability.
Choosing a Plan that’s Right for You
Unlimited Data
Competition has gotten really fierce between Australian internet providers, to the point where plans that limit your data each month are almost completely gone (except on low-cost plans, which are designed for people who aren’t going to use much data in the first place). With streaming services like Netflix, BINGE, Stan and Amazon Prime now part of our regular TV viewing – and even Foxtel getting in on the action with on-demand streaming for its customers – the last thing you want to be doing is worrying about your data usage every time you watch or download something. Plans with unlimited data give you complete peace of mind – so if you’re a family with children who are all active on the internet or a big fan of gaming online (see best broadband plans for video gamers), and do more than just browse the web and check emails, it should be priority number one.
No Contract
The great thing about the NBN, in particular, is that it makes it really easy for you, as the customer, to change providers with minimal hassle – it’s very different to the ADSL days where someone had to physically go down to the exchange and swap cables around. Of course, internet providers know this – and some of them don’t want you to have the chance to just walk out the door if you’re not happy with their service. They’ll ask you to agree to a contract – usually for 12 or 24 months – which effectively locks you in with that provider, even if you’re not happy. Thankfully, these days most providers offer plans without a contract at all. There are times when a contract plan can be a good move, though – better pricing, or included extras like a free wi-fi modem – but if you do choose to go with one, make sure you do your homework on what other customers think of that provider.
High Speed
The different technologies used in the NBN mean that the top speed your connection can have will vary – but if you’ve gone for the lower-cost options, chances are you’re not running at top speed by default. We’d recommend you go with a plan at least at the NBN25 speed tier (test your internet speed here), and if you’re planning on streaming or you have an internet-savvy family or a small business that needs to keep things moving quickly, go for NBN50 or higher (check out our guide for the best NBN50 broadband plans).
Bundling Streaming TV with Internet Plans
The idea of bundling is nothing new – internet provider Dodo famously used to bundle their internet with desirable items like laptops and tablet computers. But the NBN and the massive popularity of streaming TV have really opened up the floodgates when it comes to the potential for bundling – and you can save a lot of money by doing so!
That’s where our handy interactive broadband bundle comparison page comes into play. Instead of wading through the confusion of the many and varied internet provider websites – where the actual details of available plans and bundles can often be hard to find – you can get an overview that exactly matches your needs, all in one place.
You can get some great streaming TV deals with bundles – for example, Telstra’s Telstra TV + Unlimited Data bundle, which gives you everything you need to get set up for streaming, including all the data you can use, a fast and reliable connection, and even the device to handle the streaming (the much-admired Telstra TV 3). Three months of the streaming service BINGE is thrown in, as well a free month of Foxtel Now, so you can jump right into HBO’s award-winning shows and start streaming live TV as soon as you’re connected.
Other Ways to Access the Internet
The NBN is now available to almost all homes and businesses in Australia, but some prefer to connect via other methods – in some cases getting even better performance. One very viable option that’s gaining popularity is mobile broadband, running on the 4G and 5G phone networks. This is an interesting option because thanks to intense competition in the mobile market, the cost of a decent-sized monthly mobile data plan has actually become quite reasonable – to the point where if you’re, say, renting a home without internet connected, you could just choose the mobile option. We’re still a long way away from seeing unlimited data plans on mobile broadband, though.
Meanwhile, good old ADSL broadband is still in use by some people and is very much an option for the small number of people whose connection is still the copper phone line. ADSL is no slouch with a reasonably good connection – you can stream Netflix in 4K with it if you’re lucky – but its speed depends on how far away from the local phone exchange you are. And the speed you get is what you’re stuck with – until the NBN arrives in your area, that is!
