10 Romantic Comedies Available on Netflix for a Cozy Night In
There’s nothing like an evening in with a glass of wine and a good movie to satisfy the couch potato inside. And what better choice than a romantic comedy to warm your heart and put a smile on your face?
Here are ten of the best romantic comedies that you can now stream on Netflix. Just make sure you have popcorn and some tissues on hand.
1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
This movie is the ultimate romantic comedy. In fact, it’s the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. It centers on a 30-year-old Greek woman, Toula (Nina Vardalos), who comes from a big family. She’s expected to continue the tradition of getting married to a nice Greek man and have lots and lots of babies, but she finds herself alone and working at her family’s restaurant.
Fed up with her boring life, she gets a makeover, a new job and a date with a cute Anglo-Saxon guy named Ian (John Corbett). They fall in love and he asks her to marry him. They immediately start planning the wedding, but with two such different families, the preparations don’t go too well. Will Ian and Toula manage to get hitched, or will they simply elope and leave their crazy families behind? That’s for you to find out.
2. The Spectacular Now
The Spectacular Now is a beautifully written teenage romantic comedy, which manages to avoid common teen movie clichés. Shailene Woodley plays Aimee, a shy but smart girl who one day finds the school party boy, Sutter (Miles Teller), passed out drunk on her lawn. She wakes him up and they start talking. The two of them spend more and more time together, and even though Sutter’s still hung up on his ex and he drinks way too much, Aimee falls in love with him.
Sutter helps her loosen up and stand up for herself, while Aimee encourages him to reconnect with his estranged father. Eventually, they both have to make some tough decisions, as graduation approaches.
3. Two Weeks Notice
This classic romantic comedy has two of the most important ingredients any such movie should have – Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. If you haven’t seen this flick, you’re missing out. If you have seen it, then you must watch it again and again and again… You get my point!
Sandra Bullock is Lucy, a fresh faced lawyer who is determined to change the world and right every wrong ever made, at least in her community. Hugh Grant is George, a ridiculously rich guy who has never worked a day in his life. He needs a new lawyer, so Lucy starts working for him. But George proves to be a very difficult boss and Lucy becomes more like his care taker rather than his counselor. Fed up with his antics, she quits just when George realizes he has fallen for her.
4. My Year Without Sex
This quirky Australian comedy is the perfect mix of funny situations and endearing characters. Natalie, played by Sacha Horler, is a happily married mother of two. But when she suffers a ruptured brain aneurysm, the doctors forbid her to have sex for a year. Now she has to maintain her husband’s interest and also take care of her children, while dealing with a serious illness.
This heartwarming movie tells a relatable story of family struggles and gives a few tips on how to deal with them.
5. No Strings Attached
This movie is for anyone out there who tried and failed miserably at maintaining a “no strings attached” type of relationship with someone. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher are Emma and Adam, two acquaintances who decide to have a strictly physical relationship. That doesn’t go as planned, of course – despite their strict rules, they start to develop feelings for each other. Emma gets scared and puts a stop to their relationship, but she eventually realizes she has fallen for Adam as well.
Not only will this movie make you laugh, but it will also make you reconsider some of your friendships. And let’s not forget about the aww-inducing scene when Adam gives Emma a bouquet of carrots because she doesn’t like flowers!
6. It’s Complicated
If teen movies are not your thing, then you can choose a romantic comedy with three of the best actors in the world – Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Meryl plays a single mother of three, Jane, who starts to have feelings for her architect, Adam, played by Steve Martin. But when Jane reconnects with her ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin) at their son’s graduation, they start an affair, even though Jake is married with a younger woman.
After a series of hilarious moments, Jane is faced with a choice: will she go back to her ex-husband or will she start a new relationship with Adam?
7. The Proposal
Sandra Bullock stars in yet another hilarious romantic comedy, this time with the very hot and sometimes naked Ryan Reynolds. Bullock is Margaret, a determined and busy editor in chief at a publishing company in New York. But, after she violates her work visa, she is about to be deported to Canada. So she does like any other powerful business woman would do – she pressures her hot assistant Andrew (Reynolds) to marry her, so she can stay in the US.
Their quick wedding attracts unwanted attention from an immigration agent though, so the newlyweds travel to Andrew’s home town so she can meet his family and look more legitimate. There, Margaret finds out what having an actual family really feels like, and, after some awkward but hilarious naked encounters, she finally admits that she has fallen for her assistant. The question is, does Andrew feel the same; and will his family accept her?
8. 10 Things I Hate About You
This teen romantic comedy brings Shakespeare’s classic Taming of the Shrew to modern times. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Cameron, a new student at Padua High School. He falls in love with one of the most popular girls in school, Bianca, but he cannot date her. The girl’s father has forbidden her to date anyone before her older sister Kat, played by Julia Stiles, finds a boy to go out with.
Though this problem seems to have an easy solution… that’s not really the case. Kat is quite difficult and she’s not interested in boys. The only thing she wants to do is to get into a good college. Cameron doesn’t give up that easy. He pays Patrick (Heath Ledger) to ask Kat out, and after some difficulty, he succeeds.
But, things are never this simple when it comes to teen rom coms. Kat falls in love with Patrick and he is not impervious to Kat’s charm. However, when she finds out the truth, she breaks up with Patrick and puts in danger Cameron and Bianca’s new relationship. Will these crazy kids make it in the end? Tune in to find out!
9. License to Wed
This comedy starts with a happy ending. Sadie and John, played by Mandy Moore and John Krasinski, have already met, fallen in love and decided to get married. Surprisingly, that’s when the problems start. Sadie has always wanted to get married in her family church, and when a slot opens up, there’s only one issue left – the eccentric minister, masterfully played by Robin Williams. The future husband and wife will have to go through the minister’s insane and hilarious class that will put their love and patience to test.
10. Crazy Stupid Love
With a stellar cast, this romantic comedy tackles more than just a meet cute and a happily ever after. Cal (Steve Carell) is a middle age married man who finds out that his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) cheated on him. Hurt, he seeks counsel from a young man he meets in a bar, Jacob (Ryan Gosling). Jacob teaches him how to date without getting involved but, as he teaches Cal to become a player, he falls for a young woman whom he also meets at a bar, Hannah (Emma Stone). These deeply flawed characters’ lives are all interconnected and the more they want to become uninvolved, the more they discover how silly, crazy and wonderful love really is.
