With a laser-sharp emphasis on low cost, Vaya Mobile had already earned many fans when it was bought by amaysim in January 2016. They continue to operate as a separate entity, with prices that might just blow you away. Their plans are tailored so you can save money and take advantage of unlimited calls and hefty amounts of data.
What Makes Vaya Mobile Different?
Billing themselves as “the best telco you’re never heard of” and leveraging the Optus 4G Plus network for wide coverage and reliability, Vaya Mobile keeps things simple. The provider offers a four-tier plan structure – or five if you prefer month-to-month rather than a short 6-month contract – and all plans come with unlimited calls and text. Their varying costs relate entirely to data allowances.
Voicemail is free – always a welcome thing, as are calls to 13, 1300 and 1800 numbers. As you can see, things are pretty straightforward. Vaya offers a voice service for those who don’t take the talking thing all that seriously and who don’t need to call overseas. No international calls are included, but you can call overseas starting from a remarkably low 2c per minute.
Text Messaging on Vaya
You probably saw this coming, but yes, all national SMS and MMS messages are free under all plans. However, there is no allowance for international messaging. A text overseas will cost you 25c, while an MMS is 75c. If you’re happy to stay local, you’ll never have to worry about going over your limit with texts. Plus, you can send photos of your latest Pokemon catch to your friends without watching the meter!
Vaya’s Data Allowances
It’s the data side of things where Vaya starts to distinguish its plans properly, and that’s where your main choice is going to be. The five month-to-month tiers give you 2GB, 6GB, 15GB, 30GB and 50GB a month, respectively. That top tier, at $56, is easily the value winner for heavy data users. However, if you do use less (and most do) you can save yourself some dollars by settling on an allowance that works for you.
If you’re willing to go for a short six-month contract instead, the mobile data rates get seriously generous across four tiers, ranging from $24 to $56 per month for allowances of 8GB, 20GB, 40GB and a massive 60GB.
Vaya leverages the Optus 4G Plus network. Thus, modern smartphones that support LTE Advanced will be able to get some blistering speeds going to help crunch up that data. Vaya specifically says that they are also completely fine with “tethering” – connecting your phone to a computer to use as a broadband connection. It’s your data, after all, and you can use it however you like!
Vaya’s Pricing Is Flexible
The pricing tiers for the phone plans are actually pretty close together. The 2GB plan is $16/month, the 6GB plan $24/month, the 15GB plan $36/month. The 30GB plan is only a little bit more expensive at $44/month, with the top-tier 50GB plan capping out at $56. Vaya also offers customers the option of a six-month contract. If you choose to go this route, you’ll pay the same price as the top four month-to-month tiers, but get even more data to play with.
Month-by-month plans can be changed or cancelled any time.
Does Vaya Mobile Have Any Special Offers?
Vaya’s offers usually take up prominent space front and centre on their website and consist of discounts to plans via a special code. While at the moment, they’re sticking to their already well priced plans and keeping it simple, the company also states that if you refer a friend to Vaya, you’ll get $15 additional credit on your account.
