Review was updated on 30th July, 2019

Not too long ago, Spintel hit their 10th anniversary as a provider of broadband and phone services. They’re a small company doing big things for Australian internet users. Over the past decade, they’ve gathered much acclaim – winning awards for value and service 18 times. This included Money Magazine’s “Best of the Best” 2017 award for Best Broadband Bundled Plan.

Spintel Broadband Review

Spintel has long specialised in giving customers solid value ADSL broadband bundles with reliable connectivity. With the move to the NBN well underway, Spintel has taken its value model and applied it to the new network, working in partnership with Optus Wholesale. They can connect you via ADSL as well as the various flavours of NBN. A deeper review of Spintel reveals they certainly deliver on the motto “our flexible bundles have you covered, whatever your budget”. You get far better value with a broadband/phone bundle than you do for stand-alone “naked” ADSL.

Spintel’s NBN Plans

If you’re ready for the NBN in your area, Spintel has a versatile range of plans and bundles to pick from. Their website is set up so you can tailor your plan to exactly what you need. Pick from two data allowances –  500GB/month or unlimited. There’s also the three speed tiers offered on the NBN to choose from. You then pick how much you want to spend on the included home phone service. This ranges from nothing (but with all calls charged at a reasonable rate) to $10/month for service with all calls, including calls to mobiles. You have a choice of two modem/routers (Spintel call these “gateways”) – both made by respected Australian brand Netcomm, with the option to add gigabit Ethernet and super-fast Wi-Fi. In a home environment, you may not need the more expensive option, so there’s money to be saved. The slower device runs at the maximum speed of the NBN, so unless you’re doing a lot of local file transfers between computers, you’re safe to go with the cheaper option.

Key Spintel Features

  • Offers a wide range of broadband services including NBN
  • 3 speed tiers available: NBN12, NBN50 & NBN100
  • Same base prices for monthly and 18-month plans
  • Data usage is automatically capped
  • The option to add additional data each month
  • Gives $69 credit with 12-month plans
  • No setup fees on month-to-month
  • Offers cheap mobile bundling

Finally, you get a choice of contract – 18 months or none at all. There’s free setup on the term-based plan (plus $49.95 credit) but a $70 setup fee for month-to-month.

A 1000GB plan on a 50/20 connection is $64.95/month – this is terrific value. We recommend you step up the speed, though, especially if you’re interested in streaming video or heavy downloading. An extra 15 bucks bumps you up to 100/40 Mbps, a speed tier that’s easily worth the extra dollars if your NBN connection supports it.

Summary: Is Spintel Right for Me?

The great thing about Spintel is the way they lay out all the options and let you build your own bundle to suit your needs. Every step of the way they tell you the cost of each option, updating the total as you add or remove options. In a world of providers hiding costs behind fine print and obscure terms and conditions, Spintel is doing it the right way. They let you get the broadband service you need, while not paying for things you don’t. Still winning awards a decade on, Spintel is a great choice for getting connected to fast internet – on ADSL or the NBN – without breaking the budget or being hampered by restrictive download limits.
