The great thing about the NBN is the way it gives all providers the opportunity to run their own broadband service their way. That way, they can cater to specific groups of customers. The days of having to go with “one of the big five” to get your broadband connection are well and truly over. That’s a good thing. It not only means real competition for customers based on features, price or speed, but also allows the more imaginative companies to come into the mix. Like Flip TV.

What’s In this Review

Flip TV Broadband Review

You may not be familiar with the name. If you are, it’s likely thanks to their IPTV service, which has been running for a few years. Through a very tiny set top box, Flip TV provides live streaming access to a range of channels that regular free-to-air and pay TV simply does not offer, with the real treat being with the telco’s international TV packages.

What makes Flip TV different?

In 2017, Flip TV launched NBN-based broadband packages for home users. The launch was a success – in a crowded market dominated by the big companies and their blanket advertising, Flip TV managed to take out Money Magazine’s 2018 Gold award for Best Value NBN Broadband Plan.

FlipTV Features

Flip TV’s range of NBN plans cater to a wide range of users — the good news is that all plans are very competitively priced and offer unlimited data.

What are FlipTV’s Best Features?

  • Unlimited NBN with Anytime Data Usage
  • Uncapped data starts from under $50/month
  • Choose between 12-month & month-to-month
  • Discounted monthly fees with 12-month plans
  • 100% Australian-owned and operated
  • Offers a Price Beat Guarantee (5% off)
  • 3 speed tiers: NBN12, NBN50 & NBN100
  • Cheap call pack add-ons

That’s a huge achievement for a small company. And yet, it’s consistent with the reviews of Flip TV and its reputation for offering a high-quality service at a low cost and being incredibly responsive to customers.

Flip TV’s NBN Plans

Flip TV’s range of NBN plans cater to a wide range of users, from those who just want a quick and easy broadband connection for email and web browsing to those who need solid streaming of Netflix in HD. The good news is that all plans are very competitively priced and offer unlimited data.

Cheapest Plans

At the entry-level end, Flip TV offers the Value plan for $49.90 a month. That’s effectively a 12 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload plan that’s going to be just fine for casual browsers. The type who don’t use broadband for more than just email, web browsing, and maybe the occasional Netflix show or YouTube video. It’s still technically fast enough for Netflix’s HD streams.

Family Plans

However, if you’re planning lots of binge sessions of Stranger Things – or watching on-demand stuff from other services like Foxtel’s iQ3 On Demand – you’d be much better off spending an extra $10 per month on the 25 Mbps Premium plan or $20 more for the $69.90/month Family plan, which gives you a maximum 50 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. Of course, the actual speed you get is down to your NBN connection.

Fastest Plans

If you want to go faster still (and your NBN connection can handle it) there’s also a Fast 100 plan which will top out at 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up at $89.90/month. It’s a great-value option – but only if you’re lucky enough to have an NBN connection that can support it. Flip TV’s customer service team will be able to help you work out whether or not this plan is for you (if you’re on Fibre to the Premises NBN though, those are the speeds you will get!).

Plans on Offer

By the way, all of these plans are being offered at a special price with the cheapest NBN12 plan at only $39.90 for the first 6 months. There are no lock-in contracts on any of the plans, and no setup fees.

If you don’t have a compatible modem for your NBN connection, Flip TV can sell you a high-quality pre-configured modem that’ll be guaranteed to work great with their network and phone services. It costs $149 outright, which is a good price for a very capable modem.

Does Flip TV Offer Bundled Phone Calls?

Lots of people still use their home phone, and the NBN makes it easy for providers to bundle a home phone service with their broadband packages. Flip TV is no exception.

You can get a home phone service with your Flip TV broadband service at a modest $2.95 a month, as long as you’re willing to pay as you go. In other words, no free calls are included. Local calls are 20c each, national calls are 20c per minute and calls to mobiles are 33c per minute.

However, if you make a lot of calls and don’t want to worry about the cost, there are two options to choose from. The Standard call pack at $9.95/month gives you unlimited local and national calls, but you still pay for calls to mobiles at the usual rate. If you call people from home on their mobiles a lot, the $19.95/month Bonus pack adds unlimited mobile calls in the mix. If you’re a frequent home phone user, there’s great value here.

How to Contact Flip TV customer service and support

Flip TV is one of the very few companies offering NBN broadband services that operate a customer support call centre right here in Australia. They’re reachable via a local call 6 days a week, or via a web form on their support page. From all accounts, they are incredibly responsive and helpful.

Moreover, Flip TV also backs many local community organisations, cultural events and festivals, and has access to coverage of the Victorian Football National Premier League, which supports football (the round-ball kind!) at the grass-roots level.

Customer service

Flip TV will be happy to help you with:

  • Billing Issues
  • Payment Issues
  • Getting started
  • Managing your account

What Else Does Flip TV Offer?

Perhaps not surprisingly, given their name, Flip TV also offers their own streaming TV service! You won’t find bundled plans that roll up broadband and TV – not yet, anyway. But if you’re looking for international streaming TV, this is the place to go. TV bundles include channels from Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Malta, Serbia, Greece, Poland, Spain, Chile, Portugal and Turkey; as well as various channels from South America and a range of youth-oriented channels branded as “Pink”. You can access any of these packages separately. Pack prices range from $5.95 to $29.95 per month depending on the country and the channels being offered.

You’ll be provided with a special Flip TV set top box to connect to your broadband to stream your channels via a user-friendly interface. The box also connects to your free-to-air antenna for broadcast channels and there’s 30 free channels available to all.

Summary: Is Flip right for me?

Flip TV is a great option for those looking for a reliable and affordable NBN provider. The fact that all plans come with unlimited data is perfect if you don’t want to worry about excess fees. Plus, the no-contract option makes the company particularly appealing to renters. A provider well worth considering if you’re thinking of jumping ship.
