Another week of the Hyundai A League season is upon us and it continues with a bang as we see the twenty third Sydney Derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, one of the biggest sporting events on the Australian calendar.
FC have got bragging rights over the Wanderers having won or drawn the past seven editions of the Derby. This year both sides are excited about their chances, and you can enjoy the action when streaming the games live online.
Sydney FC vs Wanderers Preview
These two sides have played each other twenty two times, with Sydney FC winning twelve of the matches compared to the four occasions the Wanderers have claimed a victory, and the other six games having resulted in draws. The last time the rivals met was in the 25th round of the 2018/19 A-League Premiership season, in a match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The game this Saturday night will be played at Bankwest Stadium in Sydney, where it’s expected to attract a crowd of close to 30,000, which is capacity for the new stadium. Sydney FC Preview
Sydney FC are the defending champions, having beat Perth Glory in a fabulous A-League Grand Final last season. That isn’t where the news stopped when it came to the club, with the champions buying Alexander Baumjohann and Kosta Barbarouses in the off season from arch rivals Wanderers and Melbourne Victory respectively, which will add even further to those already heated rivalries. The history of the A-League suggests that going back-to-back is a tough ask, but the squad that coach Steve Corica has assembled will make sure they give themselves every chance of achieving the feat. They have key players all over the field, but Andrew Redmayne might be the most important of them all. Every great side needs a great goalkeeper and that is exactly what he has been in recent years, developing his game so much so that he’s now second in line to Matty Ryan as goalkeeper for Australia – a remarkable rise in a short space of time for the Sydney FC’s last line of defence.
Wanderers Preview
The Wanderers are a team to watch this season. For the past two years, they’ve had to play here, there and everywhere while their new stadium was being built and this season, they will be playing their home games at Bankwest Stadium. If they want to be a contender for the title this season they will have to turn that ground into a fortress, like they did with the old Parramatta Stadium when they were coached by Tony Popovic. Markus Babbel is the man at the helm now and after enduring a testing time last season, he looks to have a squad capable of improving on last years position of eighth. This is in no small part due to the inclusion of defenders Matty Jurman and Dylan McGowan, both of whom have had plenty of experience representing Australia. The Wanderers defence last season was very shaky, but with those two old heads down back, teams will likely have a much more difficult time scoring on them. The recruitment of Alexander Meier is also fascinating – the Wanderers have struggled to get goals in recent season, but if he can fire, then the side will be a much more dangerous one.
