Stan has tried to distance itself from its rivals by heralding their hit US shows Breaking Bad
, Better Call Saul
, and Transparent. Notably Transparent
is an original production from Amazon and is only available to its streaming customers. Netflix started the trend of streaming companies producing original content when they debuted House of Cards
and Orange is the New Black
. These shows have not only lured in new subscribers, but have been huge ratings and award winners for these companies.
For Stan’s first original production they are embracing an already popular commodity. The Wolf Creek television show will be a continuation of the horror film series Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek 2. The film’s writer and director Greg McLean will be involved in the new television series.
McLean told The Sydney Morning Herald that the TV show wouldn’t necessarily be the equivalent of Wolf Creek 3 as television shows have a much different feel than feature films. McLean said, “The films work in a very particular way and they’re very much horror; TV is more of a suspense thriller.”
Stan also has plans for a political drama called Enemies of the State that is based on the life of Lionel Murphy who served as a barrister, parliamentarian, and high judge in Australia. Stan hopes to start production on both new series later this year.
Speaking about Stan’s commitment to original programming Nick Forward, Stan’s director of content said the following, “We’re thrilled to be working with such talented local writers and producers as we kick off the development slate. The opportunity to create world class shows outside the constraints of the traditional TV schedule is a fantastic brief for any producer.”
