Julian Fellowes, creator of beloved series Downton Abbey, is set to adapt Doctor Thorne, a three-part drama based on novels by writer Anthony Trollope. Fellowes is a big fan of Trollope and is delighted to be writing the new drama set to air on ITV.
The new drama will tell the story of Dr. Thomas Thorne, who lives in an English village with his niece, Mary, a wonderful girl blessed with plenty of gifts – except money.
“It’s a rich and multi-layered story of class and social standing and a timeless love story which Julian has brought to life brilliantly with his inimitable wit and warmth,” ITV’s director of drama Steve November told BBC. Filming is set to begin later this year.
Besides Downton Abbey, which will end after season six, Fellowes also wrote a Titanic mini-series that was shown on ITV1 in March/April 2012 and is currently working on the period drama The Gilded Age for NBC.
