Netflix announces plan to premiere 20 new TV Shows a year

New show or season every two and a half weeks for Netflix

During a conference on Monday, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that within the next five years, the steaming platform plans to premiere a new show or season every two and a half weeks.

He said “There won’t be a new show for everybody, every two-and-a-half weeks,” but shows that cater to “specialized” audiences.” He also added that “Netflix will eventually be the largest producer of original content in the world.”

Netflix has already released 8 TV shows only available on the streaming platform, and the new series expected to launch soon are the adventure drama Marco Polo and a TV adaptation of the Marvel comic Daredevil.

Netflix is also planning to release more original movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny, planned for next year.

According to a survey lead by CBS,  less than 10 percent of Netflix viewing includes its original shows. It questions the ability of Netflix to create new hit shows, as it claimed that Netflix hasn’t had “a true new hit” since “Orange Is the New Black” and “House of Cards” premiered in 2013.

Netflix choose to not release ratings information because they think “that it works against the quality of television”, claimed Ted Sarandos. The US platform recently launched in Europe and plans a launch in Australia and New Zealand in March 2015. Sarandos said they want Netflix to be available worldwide in the next five years.
