2018 World Series Indo Pacific Rugby
In 2017, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) announced that the Western Force would be the Australian team cut from the 2018 Super Rugby season, as specified by Sanzar, given the need for improvement in the field of play. That left Western Force owner Andrew Forrest absolutely seething and as such, he created the Indo Pacific Rugby Championship, which will begin in 2019, but for 2018, he rolled out World Series Rugby. The 2018 competition is regarded as a “warm up tournament” leading into the Indo Pacific Rugby Championship for next year, and the games are by invitation-only. The competition for this year sees the Western Force playing seven matches, once each against international sides from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Hong Kong and Japan, as well as the Melbourne Rebels and Canterbury Crusaders.
When: May 4-August 17
Where: NIB Stadium, Perth
Western Force Preview
There is great intrigue about the Western Force and what they can do in this tournament leading into next year. Forrest has opened up the cheque book and brought in some world class players, namely Jaque Fourie, a former star Springbok for South Africa who has come out of retirement to play for the Western Force for this season at least, and maybe next year depending on form and how the body holds up. Joining him in regards to new faces are Rod Davies, who previously played for the Queensland Reds. On paper, it looks a very good squad but you’ll get a good guide on the team when they take on the Super Rugby teams, the Crusaders and Rebels.
