National Rugby Championship 2017
This will be the fourth Grand Final of the NRC. The format is eight games for each side, four at home and four away. From then, the top four sides play in the Semi Finals and the winner of each of those play in the Grand Final to claim bragging rights over the other teams for the next 12 months. The most successful side in the short history has been Brisbane City with two Grand Final wins. This will be the first Grand Final appearance for Queensland Country while the Vikings finished runner up in 2015.
It’s quite fitting that the two best sides in the competition will square off in the Final. They topped the regular season standings and were the better sides in their respective Semi Finals. The Vikings beat the Perth Spirit in a high scoring game, winning 40-35, with Wharenui Hawera being the star, scoring a trying and kicking 5/6. As for the Country, they were far too classy for the fairytale story, the Fijian Drua, drubbing them 57-21. Caled Timu, Duncan Paia’aua and Taniela Tupou all bagged doubles in the romp. Their outside backs are fast, and powerful, so that is something the Vikings defence will need to be watchful of.
