Daniel ‘the real deal’ Geale does battle against for NSW against rival Queenslander Jarrod Fletcher in ‘State of Origin’ boxing.
When Daniel Geale and Jarrod Fletcher do battle on December 3, it’s going to be more than just a boxing match. It’s going to be mate against mate. State against State.
Sound familiar? That’s because it’s the ‘State of Origin’ of boxing, and NSW have dominated everything this year when it comes to Australian sport, with the Blues, Waratahs and South Sydney. Now it’s Daniel Geale’s turn to fly the flag for NSW.
After a knock-out defeat at Madison Square Garden back in July against WBA middleweight title holder Gennady Golovkin, the Aussie champ is after redemption and is bent on not suffering back-to-back losses, something that has yet to have occurred during his stellar ten year boxing career.
But if he wants to win, he has to beat Jarrod Fletcher, and up and coming Queenslander who is also coming off a lost start loss, so pride is clearly on the line in the inaugural State vs. State Tournament, with this bout being the drawcard.
The reason for this fight is that Geale’s ranking dropped after the loss in July, and he then lost rights to challenge for world titles, so a win over Fletcher will lift that ranking back up and then he can have another chance at world championship glory, and most notably, another crack at Golovkin.
“I’d love to have another crack at Golovkin”, Geale said at the fight launch recently.
“I know I can fight better I did.”
As for Fletcher, he was pretty blunt in saying how he hopes the fight will pan out. “I want to knock him (Geale) out.”
And Geale’s response? “He (Fletcher) has no idea what he is in for.”
Add NSW Rugby League captain Paul Gallen and his fight against former Rugby League bad boy Anthony Watts as an under-card to the Geale and Fletcher bout…and you have one exciting night of interstate boxing to watch!
The Horden Pavillion is no stranger to boxing fights, with the most notable being earlier this year when Daniel Geale defeated Garth Wood in convincing fashion. The venue also has played, and will play, hosts to big musical acts such as Eric Clapton, The Vamps, London Grammar and Sam Smith.
Four reasons you don’t want to miss a minute of this match:
Daniel Geale needs to win in order to have another realistic chance of being a world champion again
Jarrod Fletcher is on the rise and will be a more than worthy rival for Geale
Daniel Geale has never lost two bouts on the bounce. He will be more hungry than ever.
