Overnight TV Ratings and News for Thurs June 6: Free to Air vs Pay TV

A look at the latest ratings results and what they mean for the networks and their shows – as well as a glimpse at how well your favourite shows are doing!

Ratings News: Seven News Stays on Top, Masterchef Coming in Close

News on Seven and Nine reign supreme with primetime news taking the lead — with Seven News reaching a million viewers in the consolidated 28 figures, and Nine pulling a close 800-900K. After that, Masterchef Australia on Network Ten manages to complete the round up of the top 5, still managing to seal its relevance and dominance being the only non-news show for the first 5 spots. It’s a pretty good mix after that with several other reality competition and news shows entering the mix, as well as a sneaky but highly performing kids show to close in the top 20.

NRL Takes the Win

The beginning of winter has brought about a whole lot of sports across free to air and subscription channels. This time, it’s the NRL that takes the first spot with a whopping 243,000 holding steady through the 28-day rankings. Lifestyle shows like Aussie Gold Hunters and Selling Houses Australia also make their own mark as they complete the round up of the top 5 spots.

Nine Takes the Lion’s Share

There’s no denying that Nine is still very much on top with dominance across overnights, as well as the 7-day and 28-day consolidated ratings. Seven does come in very close, slowly but surely nipping at the heels of Nine’s dominance – the Nine Network at 30.9% and Seven Network at a tight 29.5%. The rest of the other networks are a bit far away with Network Ten at 17.0% and ABC at 14.3%. SBS, is steadily increasing viewership with 8.3%.

It’s Time for the Cricket World Cup

Not much of a surprise here with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 bagging the top spots, putting Nine’s viewership ahead of the pack. Even though Nine has only managed to secure rights to a handful of CWC matches, it’s still took the lead, leaving the rest of the shows — mostly kids shows — in the dust. It’s still quite an interesting thing to note how kids shows like Octonauts and Bluey are pulling in rather enviable viewer numbers, which would have earned them the top spots if not for the season of cricket.
