The USA will be taking part in their fifth Rugby World Cup this spring in Japan. They come into this spring’s tournament with one of their strongest ever thanks to a formed professional league in North America. They also have a handful of players at big European teams, so coach Gary Gold will be looking to see some solid progress.
The Eagles have recently had some major success in the Rugby Sevens series and will look to that for inspiration in the 15 man game. They are seen by the bigwigs at World Rugby as a key tool for breaking into the American market, and we are likely to see them gradually get better over the coming years.
First up, however, is the tournament in Japan where they share a group with England, France, Argentina and Tonga – so it is safe to say they will be put to the test
The Rugby World Cup TV Preview – Can USA reach the knock-out stages?
In all of their previous World Cup appearances, the Eagles have managed a total of three wins, the last of which came against Russia in 2011. They will definitely be looking at their pool game against Tonga for a win, in what promises to be a closely fought contest.
The USA has never reached the knock out stages of a World Cup, but a shock win over tier-one nation, Scotland last year showed they are moving in the right direction. The two teams that progress from Pool C should come out of England, France and Argentina, but solid performances with respectful scorelines against these three will be seen as a good 2019 Rugby World Cup for the North Americans.
USA could really be the team to cause an upset during this year’s tournament, and with players such as Cam Dolan, AJ MacGinty and Joe Taufete’e, they have some serious talent within their ranks. It’s safe to say that each one of their games will be interesting to watch.
Review of USA’s Group Matches
USA vs England: The Eagles have a real test against one of the tournament favourites in their opening game. England is really hitting form coming into the World Cup and should win comfortably.
USA vs France: The Les Bleus of France have enough attacking force and technical ability to come through against the Eagles, but you do feel there is an upset waiting to happen with the ever-improving Americans.
USA vs Argentina: Argentina fancy themselves to advance to the knock-out stages ahead of France, and they must win this game to do so. Expect a competitive match with the Pumas using their squad depth to gain an advantage in the second half.
USA vs Tonga: This is easily the best chance the USA have to put a win on the board. They will be looking to end their World Cup campaign against a team that is pretty much operating at the same level. Will definitely be a close and enthralling encounter.
