The Best Books on Audible in Australia

Best Books on Audible Australia

Technology and the internet have changed the way we consume a lot of things – movies, television shows, news, music and more. But it’s one of the oldest forms of entertainment – books – that’s benefited the most from the increasingly digital world. We can now carry around hundreds of books on our phones, tablets or dedicated eBook readers, making it easy to catch up with a great story almost anywhere.

But sometimes, reading just isn’t an option. You might have a long commute in slow traffic to contend with every morning, but pulling out a book to pass the time isn’t an option. That’s just one situation where audiobooks fit perfectly – and, as millions of people have discovered, they’re a brilliant alternative to the printed page that can really bring a story to life – if they’re well read.

Top Audio Books on Audible

Audible has been in the audiobook game for nearly 25 years now, and in that time the audiobook – once considered a straight, dry reading of the text as an aid for the visually impaired – has grown into an art form of its own. Having the text of a great book read by a well-chosen narrator (or several of them) is both compelling and convenient; it’s reading for people who rarely have the time to stop and read. But it’s also a performance in its own right, with some of the best audiobooks drawing you into the story with an actor’s skill.

Audible has tens of thousands of audiobooks of all kinds, from fiction and autobiography to humour and history. Here’s a few of the best ones on offer right now – great places to start your audiobook addiction and, of course, excellent listens in their own right.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

The famous first book of J.K. Rowling’s epic seven-novel tale of wizards and magic, Philosopher’s Stone and the six books that follow it had already gotten a celebrated reading for Audible by actor Jim Dale. But this newer 2015 recording by actor, TV host and comedian Stephen Fry is even better. It’s a very English series of books, and Fry’s precise voice and storytelling skill is a perfect fit; he also takes his time with the books, with his versions running substantially longer than Jim Dale’s reading. You can get all seven books ready by Fry from Audible – and after hearing this first one, you’ll definitely want to get the rest.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Now a bona fide television phenomenon in its own right, this acclaimed novel by Margaret Atwood received a brand-new Audible reading earlier in 2019 – a recording clearly inspired directly by the television series. A story told in the first person, it’s largely narrated by series star Elisabeth Moss, who does a phenomenal job with a book that’s not easy to properly capture. Other narrators contribute as well – including TV series regulars Ann Dowd and Bradley Whitford. Atwood’s Booker Prize-nominated sequel, The Testaments, is also on Audible and a must after listening to this one.

Good Omens

Yet another book that made its way onto TV screens – in this case via Amazon Prime Video – Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s wonderfully weird story of Armageddon Good Omens can be had on Audible in two very different versions, depending on your preference. The full novel gets a pitch-perfect reading by British actor Martin Jarvis, and if you’re new to the book (and especially if you’re new to Pratchett or Gaiman’s strange worlds) that’d be the one to start with. But if you’re looking for something more movie-like, you could grab the BBC Radio 4 version, which is a full-scale audio drama acted by a full cast. There are quite a few such “audio movies” available on Audible, and this is one of the best.

A Game of Thrones

By now there’s surely some sort of law stating that you can’t talk about books without mentioning George R.R. Martin’s epic saga of politics, power, darkness and dragons. The first in the still-ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire series – and, of course, the book that gave the TV series its name – A Game of Thrones doesn’t hold out on going full-on epic right from the start. Marti writes very, very long books, and this reading by actor Roy Dotrice clocks in at nearly 34 hours. And that’s just the first book; if you pick up the whole set you’ll have over 200 hours of story to dive into, plus another 58 hours for the prequel books. With the TV series finished up, this could be the perfect way to revisit Westeros.

Boy Swallows Universe

A brilliant Australian novel that’s become an instant classic, Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe needs just the right voice to bring its story to life, and finds it via Stig Wemyss, a veteran Aussie TV and movie actor who’s found a whole new world of fame as an audiobook narrator. Wemyss’s laconic but precise style is a perfect fit for the book’s quoteworthy prose. As the book makes its way to international markets – and then to TV screens with Joel Edgerton set to produce – this audio version is a great way to discover one of the most acclaimed Australian books in years.

Face It

One of the best things about biographies as audiobooks is that, in many cases, they’re read by the actual person who’s the subject of the book. Debbie Harry, the iconic lead singer of Blondie, reads her autobiography with help from Blondie members Chris Stein and Clem Burke, as well as Alannah Currie (yes, the former member of Thomson Twins!) Taking in Debbie’s music and film careers and her fascinating life outside of the public eye, this is a great listen.

Gotta Get Theroux This

Perhaps the second-most-famous guy with glasses on TV, Louis Theroux has been producing memorable documentaries for TV for decades and has had some truly unusual experiences along the way, Here, he reads his own story with the sort of dry humour only Louis can muster in the face of adversity. If you enjoy his docos, you’ll love this one.
