With 84 matches, 58 wins, and a winning percentage of 69.64%, the team is heading towards a successful T20 World Cup. But how far can they go in the competition, and could they even win it? Here we look at exactly that.
What’s in this Guide?
Afghanistan World Cup preview
Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan-led, is set to make a landmark appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup in UAE by starting in the Super 12. Their Cricket Board has created two new franchises with the Shpageeza Cricket League which has had a positive effect at international level.
Since their tournament debut in 2010, Afghanistan has progressed beyond belief. The team has managed to qualify for every T20 World Cup since and even reached the Super 10 stage in 2016. They were the only team to win against West Indies (eventual champions) at the 2016 tournament, defeating them by six runs.
Some of the big names playing for the team are Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi. Rashid Khan is at present one of the best spinners in the world and will be keen to show his worth on the international stage.

Strengths of the Afghanistan cricket team
The Afghan cricket team has one of the toughest squads who have overcome all sorts of adversity just to play the game. But what are their game strengths?
Star player Rashid Khan
At present, the Afghanistan cricket team has one of the most lethal leg spinners of any international cricket team. Rashid Khan is possibly the best spinner in both white-ball formats. His record of 7 wickets against the West Indies in one ODI match is a particular career highlight.
List of quality spinners
The team has top-notch spinners such as Rashid Khan (best bowler of T20), Mohammad Nabi (second-best T20 all-rounder) and Mujeed UR Rahman. On the types of wickets being played on during the World Cup, these three could be unplayable.
Afghanistan cricket team is backed by one of the best fast bowler coaches globally, Shaun Tait. The former Aussie international has guided them in the right direction since taking over and will relish the thought of taking his time into the Finals. His experience with Australia and BBL will be priceless for the squad.
Downsides of the team
There are becoming fewer and fewer weaknesses for this fast-evolving group of players. But what will the big teams be targeting?
Afghanistan is yet to go deep into a competition and face the biggest pressure situations. Although not a lot seems to face this ambitious team, a test against one of the bigger teams in must win game will be a real gauge of how far they can go.
Although there are a few good batters in the Afghanistan squad, but the tail end of their order can sometimes crumble. This is what bigger teams will target, especially when bowling first.
Will the Afghanistan team stand strong in the T20 World Cup?
The future of the Afghanistan cricket team in the ICC T20 World cup this year is a grey area. With some of the toughest competitors, such as England, India, South Africa, their group is certainly challenging.
With the captaincy of Rashid Khan and the young guns of the team, there is still hope for the team to shine in the T20 world cup.
