What is a modem?
A modem is a piece of equipment that allows access to the Internet with more than one device at a time, either via a direct connection or via Wi-Fi. A modem can also be referred to as a Router or gateway and is usually supplied by an Internet Service Provider. For NBN, you will need a router that can handle fast speed.
A Cable modem can support data transfer rates of up to 30 Mbps (Mega Bits per second), which is more than 500 times faster than the older technology found in a Dial-up modem.
Another key advantage is that cable modems maintain a continuous connection to the Internet, and as such there’s no need to dial your Internet Service Provider (ISP) each time you want to use your computer.
