iOS is the proprietary mobile operating system created by Apple Inc for all their mobile devices including all lines of iPhone and iPad devices.
Previously called iPhone OS, iOS was first shipped for the iPhone in 2007 and has since then been extended to other Apple mobile devices like the iPad Touch and Apple TV (2nd generation onwards). As of Dec 2014, iOS devices account for 13% volume of global smart phones shipped and 34% of revenues.
The iTunes App Store, which hosts all iOS apps, now has over 1.2 million apps for iOS users to choose from.
