DVR is essentially a Digital Video Recorder, often a set-top box, that allows users to record and playback television content including TV shows and movies.

In earlier days DVRs were typically set-top boxes with little to no internal storage and required connecting an external hard drive or flash drive to record content; while PVRs came with inbuilt hard disks for storage. Today, this distinction has blurred and DVRs and PVRs are essentially the same.
