What’s in this Guide?
What is the NBN?
The NBN is Australia’s National Broadband Network, an optical fibre network which was introduced to replace the copper telephone wire and cable broadband network in the country.
Rolling out the NBN is the biggest infrastructure project in Australia’s history and is being implemented to replace the previous generation of cable and copper wire telecommunications infrastructure.
The NBN has not only future-proofed Australian homes and businesses for the next generation of digital products and services, but it is also replacing traditional phone lines. In fact, Telstra’s NBN plans come with an Internet-based home phone line included – you can even keep your old phone number.

Telstra NBN Network Speeds Explained
Telstra NBN plans are split into six speed tiers , with speeds measured in mbps (megabits per second*). Check out the Tesltra NBN speeds below:
|Basic Speed||12 mbps||0.8 mbps|
|Standard Speed||25 mbps||4 mbps|
|Standard Plus Speed||50 mbps||17 mbps|
|Premium Speed||100 mbps||17 mbps|
|Superfast (add-on)||250 mbps||22 mbps|
|Ultrafast (add-on)||700 mbps||40 mbps|
In practice the download and upload speeds on NBN plans may not match the advertised speeds dependent on network loads at specific times and how your modem is connected to the NBN.
Once your NBN modem is up and running and your you are connected to the Telstra NBN internet service, you can easily check your download and upload speeds online.
*Note that mbps speeds are not an indication of how many megabytes are downloaded or uploaded per second. To calculate speeds in megabytes per second, divide the mpbs speed by 8.
Types of NBN connections
The types of NBN connection point available to you will be dependent on how NBN infrastructure has been rolled out for your premises and area.
Six types of NBN connections are available across Australia. These include:
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). These connect the NBN box in your premises directly to the NBN fibre network.
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC). HFC connections run a coaxial cable from an NBN modem in your premises to a connection node on your street, which then connects to the NBN fibre network.
- Fibre to the Node (FTTN). FTTN connections run from an NBN fibre network node in your location to your home using copper telephone wires.
- Fibre to the Building (FTTB). FTTB connections position a fibre connection node inside a building. Copper cabling is then used to connect this node to various connection sockets within the building.
- Fibre to the Curb (FTTC). FTTC connections use copper telephone wiring to connect to fibre nodes outside your premises.
- Fixed Wireless (FW). Fixed wireless provides cable-free access to a local NBN fibre node. The node is connected to a local NBN wireless tower, which transmits a signal to a fixed antennae on your roof, which connects to an NBN box inside your premises.
